Bangladesh bans diabetes drugs Pioglitazone, Rosiglitazone that lead to heart failure

The government has banned two diabetes drugs over safety concerns.

The Directorate General of Drug Administration recently in an order cancelled registration of all 35 products of Pioglitazone and Rosiglitazone.
Prof Sharfuddin Ahmed, who is a member of the drug control committee as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, told bdnews24.com the decision was based on global studies that found those linked to heart failure.
The US where those drugs were popular earlier banned them.
Prof AK Azad Khan, Secretary General of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, told bdnews24.com that patients would not suffer due to the ban.
“Basically those were hardly the prescribed drugs in Bangladesh. They were popular in the US, but they had banned it before us,” he said.
He said those drugs cause “fluid retention and subsequently increase chance of cardiac failure”.
