Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan has called for a shift away from polythene and single-use plastics to protect biodiversity and achieve a sustainable environment.
Speaking at an event held at Dhaka University’s Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Monday, she emphasised the importance of tree planting and the urgent need to eliminate these harmful materials.
The event, themed “Sustainable environment and biodiversity conservation in a non-discriminatory atmosphere with the spirit of harmony", also included discussions on plastic waste and a nature-drawing competition.
Rizwana said, “We must discard single-use plastics to make the Earth safe for everyone. Polythene must be rejected today. Trees are nature’s protective shield, so we need to increase their numbers. Promoting foreign tree species should no longer be allowed.”
“I believe Dhaka University will lead this initiative. This programme represents a significant step towards enhancing our awareness,” she added.
Students and environmentalists actively participated in different aspects of the programme. Notably, in the nature-drawing competition, students expressed their thoughts on environmental conservation through their artwork.
