Film producer Mohammad Iqbal, known to be close to the actor, told bdnews24.com on Monday that Shakib’s lawyer sent a letter to Apu on Friday, which says the actor seeks a divorce.

“Shakib Khan is now in India for a film shoot. I spoke to him on the phone around 1pm, he confirmed that he had sent the notice,” he said.

Iqbal said he made the phone call after getting several calls from reporters since Monday morning. “I asked him whether it was true and he confirmed.”

The actor’s lawyer, however, said the letter was sent late last month.

“The divorce letter was sent on Nov 22,” counsel Sheikh Sirajul Islam told bdnews24.com on Monday.

Neither Shakib nor Apu, who is an actress, could be reached for comment as none of them answered their phones.

Rumours have been brewing in the last two months over the couple ending their marriage, but Apu had dismissed those in an interview with bdnews24.com in early November.

“We have been married for long. I had to convert (to Islam) to get married and we have a child…I am totally disgusted over these,” she said in the interview published on Nov 10.

She had also expressed her anger over media reports based on ‘rumours’.

Shakib and Apu were cast as a pair for the first time in a 2006 film, Koti Takar Kabin.

The duo went on to star in a number of box office hits. Rumours swirled around their romance ever since.

The two tied the knot in 2008, but kept it a secret until April this year, when Apu appeared on live television in an interview with their son, born in September last year.
