The power plants produced 11,534 megawatt electricity at 7pm on Monday – a new record, according to the Power Development Board.

“It was the highest power generation in the country’s history,” PDB spokesman Saiful Hasan Chowdhury told bdnews24.com.

The previous record of highest power generation was 11,387MW set on July 18.

The PDB estimated the production on Monday would reach 11,740MW in the peak hours during the day and 12,502MW in the evening.

There was no power cut in the day of record production, Saiful claimed.

However, reports of power cuts came in from different places.

The number of power plants increased to 108 from 27 when the ruling Awami League government came into power in 2009.

More power plants hiked the power generation capacity to 20,000MW from 3,000MW, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said at a recent programme.
