During the 2018-19 budget session on Thursday, Pir Fazlur Rahman MP said Muhith had allocated money to restructure capital of the state-owned banks in previous budgets ‘to cover up the looting in the name of loans’.

“This year he has taken a new strategy – keeping aside Tk 15 billion in the name of equity re-investment fund from the finance ministry’s own budget, not the national budget,” Fazlur said.

“It can’t happen. It can’t be that some people will loot money in the name of taking loans and capital will be provided from the taxpayers’ money,” he added.

The MP also was critical of Muhith for not announcing the constitution of a separate commission to regulate the banks in the budget.

“He had said he would form the commission. Then he backtracked on his decision. Why? It would be possible to know who were involved in the lootings if the commission was formed,” Fazlur continued.

Muhith had earlier said he would form the commission in this government’s tenure.

Later, after proposing the budget, he said he would lay out the plan for the commission in this term so that the next government can form it.
