State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan inaugurated the fair at the headquarters of National Board of Revenue or NBR at Agargaon in the capital on Wednesday.

The fair is simultaneously being held at the divisional headquarters, districts and Upazilas. However, the fair will continue for four days in 56 Upazilas and 2 days in 34 Upazilas.

Those who will file returns in Dhaka and Chittagong will receive ‘Income Tax ID card’ and ‘Income taxpayer sticker,’ according to the organisers.

The fair at Agargaon has a total of 38 booths for receiving returns, of which 22 are help desks - one for the large taxpayers, one for the Department of National Savings, one for the customs, one for VAT, one for central survey zone, one for freedom fighters, and one for senior citizens.

“People own this state. The state is run by the money that the people pay in taxes,” State Minister Mannan said.

“The institutions that give us loans, they charge interest along with the principal in return for giving loans in 40/50 years,” he said in reply to a question.

Acting President of FBCCI, Sheikh Fazle Fahim, said: “Schools and colleges should be used to build awareness among people. E-learning may bring the best results.”

He added that the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry or FBCCI would provide all sorts of support to that end.

Md Nojibur Rahman, Chairman of NBR, said: “NBR is always inventing new ways to increase the number of taxpayers. As part of these efforts, we are introducing tax cards and stickers this time.”

“We have also received a new proposal to assign a pin to taxpayers. We hope to launch it next year.”
