Speaking to reporters at his ministry on Sunday, he, however, did not say when it would happen.

"Notes of Tk 1 and 2 will be withdrawn gradually. Tk 5 will be the lowest denomination," said Muhith.

At present, notes of Taka range from 1 to 1,000. Of them, Tk 1 and 2 are treasury notes, which means these are issued by the finance ministry and the rest are bank notes released by the central bank.

According to Muhith, the finance ministry now wanted no more part in issuing currency notes.

He said the Tk 1 and 2 notes and coins were now very few in circulation in the market and not in demand either.

Currently, there are coins for Tk 1 and for Tk 2 there are notes as well as coins. Tk 5 is available in both notes and coins.

Tk 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 are only found in notes.
