BCB Cricket Management Department chief Akram Khan confirmed that BCB had received Shakib’s letter. The BCB will hold discussions before taking a decision, he told bdnews24.com.

“Shakib has sent a letter to the BCB chief executive asking for a rest. As this is a major decision we will call a meeting to discuss it,” he said.

If the request is granted, the all-rounder will miss the upcoming series against South Africa. The BCB is to announce the squad for the series at 5pm on Monday. BCB President Nazmul Hasan will discuss the matter of Shakib’s break with board officials at 3pm.

Shakib’s request has surprised many. The cricketer is currently in the middle of a career-best run in Test cricket. He has scored 665 runs in his last seven Tests, his highest in any calendar year. He has also taken 29 wickets.

Bangladesh is scheduled to play only four Test matches in the coming six months.
