The university’s disciplinary committee decided to suspend the five on Sunday evening, Acting Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan told bdnews24.com on Monday.

The suspended students include Sanjay Ghosh, a 44th batch student from drama and dramatics department. The others are of the 45th batch - Mohammad Al-Rajee from government and politics department, Rayhan Patwary from geological sciences, Mokarram Shiblu from philosophy, and Shah Mushtaque Saikat from computer science and engineering department.

A team of four headed by history department’s Professor ATM Atiqur Rahman has been formed for further investigation into the allegations against the five, Firoz said. The committee was given seven working days to complete its job.

The suspended students will not be able to attend classes and exams and stay at halls until further notice, the acting proctor said.

“Their families have been informed about the suspension,” he added.

“We are taking steps to expel them after investigation,” BCL’s JU unit President Md Jewel Rana told bdnews24.com, welcoming the decision taken by the authorities.

The five BCL workers allegedly mugged Monir Sarder, son-in-law of a university driver Alamgir Hossain, when Monir was walking out of the campus early on Saturday morning.

They chased him to the back of the botanical garden on the campus after taking his cash and belongings away, the acting proctor said, quoting Monir’s relatives.

The relatives rescued him and captured three of the alleged perpetrators while two escaped after they called Monir’s wife and demanded Tk 100,000 ransom for his freedom, Firoz said.
