President Hamid to IUB convocation: Serve people and prosper

President Md Abdul Hamid has asked the students of the Independent University, Bangladesh, or IUB, to serve the people if they want to succeed in life.

The ex-officio chancellor of all the universities made the remarks at the IUB’s 20th convocation on its Bashundhara campus on Thursday, according to a media release.

Congratulating the new graduates, he said, “Serve the people, you will prosper inevitably.”

He asked the students to priorise the interests of the country and its people by attaching importance to moral education and help making ongoing national development activities sustainable.

He recognised the IUB as one of the best private universities of the country in his speech.

He expressed his “deep” satisfaction about the IUB’s academic curriculum and research strength.

“I’m very glad to know that this university is being run with the spirit and ideology of Liberation War,” the release quoted him as saying.

Smiles and excitements were all around as the graduates celebrated the successful completion of their studies, the release said.

A total of 1,166 students received degrees from six different schools under 29 programmes and disciplines at the convocation.

As many as 825 of them were in undergraduate programmes while 341 students got degrees in masters programmes.

Samara Tawziat Choudhury, a biochemistry student of School of Life Sciences, became this year’s Valedictorian and Chancellor’s Gold Medallist.

Four students from undergraduate programmes received medals and crests for outstanding contributions in extracurricular activities.

Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder Chairman, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, delivered the convocation speech.

“Life is very simple and straightforward. Do not make it complicated by chasing the material possessions. Just enjoy it with your passion; do whatever you love to do and serve the humanity. Your journey of life will then become a saga and exemplary to others,” he is quoted to have told the students.

Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury MP, University Grants Commission Chairman Abdul Mannan, and IUB Board of Trustees Chairman A Matin Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.

IUB Vice-Chancellor M Omar Rahman delivered the welcome speech.

He advised the students to follow their own passion and take responsibility for the society.

“Education and experience gathered from IUB will help the graduates to conquer the manifold challenges of the real world,” the VC said.

ESTCDT Chairman Abdul Hai Sarker, former IUB trustee board chairman Rashed Chowdhury, IUB Pro-Vice Chancellor Milan Pagon, among others, were also present on the occasion.
