The university suspended sociology department’s Assistant Professor Maidul Islam following the rules because he was sent to jail by a court, Registrar KM Noor Ahmed told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.

A court ordered Maidul into jail on Monday after his interim bail ended in a case filed under Section 57 of the ICT Act for making the remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook while expressing support for the quota reform protestors.

Former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Iftekharul Islam started the case on July 23 at Hathazari Police Station.

The Chhatra League had also declared Maidul Islam and Kh Ali-Ar-Raji, a teacher of journalism at the university, unwanted on the campus.

Alamgir Tipu, president of a now-defunct committee of BCL at the university, has submitted a memorandum to the authorities demanding the dismissal of both teachers.

Maidul had appealed for security to the proctor over the threats from BCL leaders and activists.
