BSTI finds anomalies in measurement at refuelling stations in Dhaka

The authorities have found anomalies in the amount of fuel oil sold at two filling stations in Dhaka.

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution or BSTI conducted sudden drives on different refuelling stations in the capital on Monday.

The BSTI found that the customers were getting 50ml to 300ml less octane per 10 litres at Trust Filling and SKS CNG Station at Tejgaon’s Elenbari, Anwar Hossain Molla, a director at BSTI’s Metrology Department, told bdnews24.com.

The BSTI officials tested 11 nozzles at the station, he said.

Up to 30ml less fuel oil per 10 litres is allowed considering mixing of air, according to Anwar.

A motorcycle driver who came to the station for refuelling said, “It’s a huge anomaly to give 300ml less per 10 litres. Trust Filling Station had been renowned for accurate measurement. Where will we go if it gives less?”  

Trust Filling and SKS CNG Station Project Director Major Abu Fateh Md Boshirur Rahman told bdnews24.com that they prioritise customer satisfaction over profit.

He declined commenting on the BSTI findings, saying that the institution uses its own techniques in the tests.

Rezaul Haque, the Dhaka divisional inspector at BSTI’s Metrology Department, said they found the deviations acceptable at four units of Sohrab Filling Station and five of Khaleque Filling Station at Kalyanpur.

Two units of City Filling Station at Saat Rasta in Tejgaon were found to be selling fuel oil with acceptable anomalies.

Another unit of the station, however, was selling 160ml more per 10 litres while the authorities allow up to 60ml more per 10 litres.

Rezaul said selling more than the shown measurement is also an offence.

The BSTI was initiating cases against the two stations at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court of Dhaka for the anomalies in amount of fuel oil, he added.
