Four companies selected for mobile tower licences

The telecom regulator has selected four companies for mobile tower company licences.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting, an official of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission told bdnews24.com on Thursday.

The regulator will award the licences to the companies after getting the green light from the telecoms ministry.

Of the eight applicants, edotco Bangladesh, TASC Summit Towers, iSON Tower Bangladesh and AB Hightech Consortium have been selected to operate tower business.

They were selected in line with the ‘beauty contest’ method.

edotco Bangladesh, a subsidiary company of Axiata Group’s edotco Group, scored 91 marks to become the first winner in the contest. Greencon Tower is the local shareholder and edotco Group is the foreign shareholder of the company.

TASC Summit Towers scored 88 marks to end up as the second highest gainer.

TASC Tower, a UK-based firm, and Global Holding Corporation are the foreign shareholders of TASC Summit Towers.

iSON Tower was the third company in the contest as it gained 85 marks.

Confidence Tower Holdings is the local shareholder and ECP Tower Singapore is the overseas shareholder of iSON Tower.

AB Hightech Consortium was the fourth firm that won 82 marks as per the contest method.

ADN Telecom, AB Hightech International, ZN Enterprise, Synergy Logistic and Orange Digital are the local shareholders and China Communications Services International and Changshu Fengfan Power Equipment Company are the foreign shareholders of AB Hightech Consortium.

At present, the country’s mobile phone operators have over 30,000 towers, according to the BTRC.

According to a guideline, tower companies will operate all the mobile phone towers.

A foreign firm is allowed to hold a maximum of 70 percent stake in a tower sharing company, according to the guideline.
