Their promise came at a meeting among the commerce ministry, BGMEA, BKMEA, BTMA and FBCCI at the secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday.

In order to ensure timely payment to the workers before the Eid, the business leaders sat with the home ministry, the labour ministry and the prime minister's principal secretary earlier in the day.

They assured that they will pay the wages and allowances on schedule.

Garments Workers' Rights Movement demanded from a human chain formed in front of the National Press Club on Sunday that workers be paid their salary and bonus within 20th Ramadan.

“The salary and allowances of the workers will be given in time. There may be some small problems, but we’ll try to solve them. Workers like everyone else will go home with a smile," BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman told reporters after the meeting.

BGMEA’s 15 monitoring committees are working with factory owners and the labour ministry, he said.

Every year, complications have been created over payment of the wage and festival bonus of industrial workers, especially garment workers.

As a result, workers took to the streets to demand back pay.
