As many as 25 officials of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection or DNCRP took part in a drive in 21 districts, including the capital, on Monday.
Police and local leaders of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh or CAB assisted them, DNCRP said in a media release.
It said four shops in Dhaka’s Gulshan were fined Tk 50,000 each for selling counterfeit and expired products.
Rajabi Nahar Rajani, an assistant director at DNSRP’s Dhaka office, said the shop Cold Stone opposite Gulshan Shooting Club was selling expired products and some without any price tag.
For similar reasons, Herfy restaurant at Banani was fined Tk 25,000, sweets shop Rosh Tk 30,000, Gelab Store Tk 10,000, Anila Sweets Tk 15,000, and Alauddin Trading Tk 20,000.
The DNCRP said most of the shops at Gulshan’s Navana Tower sell imported products, but many do not use maximum retail price tag or import tag on the products. Some of the products had no expiry date on them.
The directorate fined some of the shops and warned them against cheating with customers.
Its officials monitored markets in Jhalakathi, Rajshahi, Manikganj, Kushtia, Noakhali, Pabna, Chattogram, Magura, Chuadanga, Barishal, Kurhigram, Gopalganj, Bhola, Khulna, Faridpur, Gaibandha, Habiganj, and Netrakona.
In these districts, they fined 61 shops and factories total Tk 371,800 for making food products at unhealthy places, selling goods without any MRP seal, expired products, including medicine, cheating with customers while weighing products, using banned ingredients in foods and not showing any price list.
