Tanners will buy cowhide at Tk 50-55 per square foot in Dhaka and at Tk 40-45 in the rest of the county this year.

The price of goat hide has been set at Tk 20-22 and Tk 15-17 for 'Baqra' goat hides across Bangladesh.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed announced the prices on Sunday after a meeting in his office with representatives from the industry.

The stakeholders are yet to decide whether the prices will hold for salted or unsalted leather. The matter will be left to the market due to disagreements between traders and tanners, the minister said.

Last year the prices of cowhide were set at Tk 50 per sq ft in Dhaka and Tk 40 per sq ft outside Dhaka. Goat hide had been set at Tk 20 and ‘Baqra’ hide at Tk 15.

Bangladesh produces 220 million square feet of hide a year, 64.82 percent of which is cowhide, 2.25 percent buffalo hide and 1.2 percent sheep skin, according to the Tanners Association. More than half is produced during Eid-ul-Azha.
