The government has decided to open talks with different stakeholders to make a "time-befitting" policy for gold imports, a longstanding demand by jewellers.
"It is a traditional business sector of Bangladesh. But due to the absence of hard and-fast rules for the import of gold, the jewellery sector is not flourishing in a manner as we think of," Finance Minister Muhith said in parliament on Thursday.
"So the association of this sector has made various proposals in order to formulate a realistic guideline for imports of gold and to make the industry business friendly," he said.
"This will help flourishing this sector as well as creating export market abroad. I hope that we can formulate such policy within this calendar year."
