Dhaka University bans all forms of political activities on campus

The decision has been made at an emergency meeting of the university's highest policymaking body

Dhaka University has decided to ban all forms of political activities by students, teachers, and support staff on campus.

The decision came during an emergency meeting of the university's syndicate, its highest decision-making body, held on Thursday night.

Two syndicate members, who preferred anonymity, told bdnews24.com that the ban would remain in effect until further notice.

One of those members said, "The only agenda of the emergency syndicate meeting was the ban on political activities on campus. After discussions, we decided to prohibit all forms of politics by students, teachers, and staff inside the campus until further notice."

The university's spokesperson and Pro Vice-Chancellor (administration) Prof Sayema Haque Bidisha told bdnews24.com that an official statement communicating the decision will be issued.

She said, "Syndicate members have provided their opinions on the matter, and based on those, we have reached a decision. We will share the details through a formal announcement."

However, she would not get into the specifics of the decision.

Debates on whether to ban student politics at Dhaka University have been raging in recent years, but no administration had taken an official stance on the matter.

Following the fall of the Awami League government amid massive student protests and the subsequent formation of the interim government, there has been a change in the university's administration.

Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor.

The new administration has also set a date for resuming classes two and a half months after the university's closure.

Before that, they decided to prohibit political activities by students and teachers.
