A routine pondside bath has taken a fatal turn in Lakshmipur, as a grandfather and his two grandchildren drowned.

The incident took place at the Sadar Upazila’s Shakchar, according to Wahid Parvez, chief of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station.

The dead were identified as Abu Siddique Patwari, 70, along with his grandson known only as Piyash, 8, and granddaughter Poppy Akter, 6.

Locals said Siddique had taken his two grandchildren to bathe in the pond in front of the house, and at one point went underwater himself.

When he failed to resurface for some time, Piyash and Poppy went into the water to look for him, and they too drowned, they said.

About an hour after the incident, locals recovered all three bodies from the pond.

Residents suspect Siddique suffered a stroke in the water, drowned, and was followed in by the two children searching for him.

Mehedi Hasan Faruk, a Ward No. 1 member of Shakchar Union Parishad, said losing three members of the same family was deeply painful.

Officer Wahid said officers were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the news, and that necessary legal action would be taken after speaking with the family.
