Ataullah Amin, also the campaign secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan Hifazat-e Islam, was arrested in Mohammadpur on Wednesday, said Commander Khandaker Al Moeen, director of the RAB legal and media wing.

The Hifazat leader has been named in cases related to recent violence and riots in 2013, the RAB official said.

“Amin also made incendiary statements,” he added.

Amin will be handed over to the police, Moeen said.

Amin’s detention follows the arrest of Hifazat-e Islam Joint General Secretary Mamunul Haque on Apr 18.

Haque was known for his hate speech and aggressive sermons in religious congregations and on social media, enjoying popularity among hardliners.

According to police, Haque has confessed to inciting Qawmi madrasa students to riot in an attempt to overthrow the government.
