Police arrest man with laptop stolen from Election Commission’s office in Chattogram

The anti-terrorism unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police has arrested a man with a laptop stolen from the local office of the Election Commission in the port city.

Mostafa Farooq, 36, who was involved in updating the voter list, was apprehended from Mominbag residential area in the city, Deputy Commissioner Md Shahidullah of the counter-terrorism unit said in a news conference on Friday.

Mostafa is involved in making fake NID cards. Police recovered two laptops from him with one stolen from the Election Commission’s local office, said Shahidullah.

They found important information on Rohingyas and the Election Commission in storage devices retrieved from Mostafa, he said.

Mostafa had worked as a technical support staff for the voter list update programme under the Boalkhali Upazila Election Office.

Joynal Abedin, the office assistant at the EC office in Chattogram who was arrested earlier on charges of assisting Rohingya refugees to obtain NID cards, provided information about Mostafa, during an interrogation.
