Fire at Chattogram shipyard kills worker, injures five

A man has died and five others are injured after a fire broke out at a shipyard in Chattogram’s Sitakunda Upazila.

The incident occurred at the Premier Trade Corporation shipyard in the Upazila’s Bar Aulia at 8:30 am on Wednesday.

Workers were breaking up a ship when the fire started at a room near its engine, Harun Pasha, an official of the Kumira Fire Station, told bdnews24.com.

The dead was identified as the 25-year-old Md Rubel. His co-workers Masud, 19, Sohel, 22, Al Amin, 27, Mamunul Islam, 20, and Jalil have been admitted to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

"According to locals, a boiler or cylinder had exploded there, sparking the flames. The fire was burning when fire service personnel arrived at the scene. But the locals had taken the injured to the hospital by then."

Informed of the incident, a fire service team was dispatched to the scene and brought the flames under control, he said.

ASI of Chattogram Medical College Hospital Police Outpost ASI Alauddin Talukder said, six people were brought to the hospital after the incident. One of them was subsequently declared dead by doctors on duty.

"The five others are receiving treatment at the burns unit. Of them, Jalil is in a critical condition."
