The MPs rejected the private member motion placed by independent MP Rezaul Karim Bablu in voice vote on Thursday.

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain urged Rezaul to withdraw he motion.

The government considers the existing age ceiling for entry into public service reasonable considering all aspects, Farhad told parliament.

The age limit had been raised to 27 from 25 and then to 30 after independence.

“Students are achieving post-graduate degrees at the age of 23 now as we don’t have any session jam in the universities. They have six to seven years to prepare for job,” the state minister said.

“Besides this, raising the age limit to 35 will create complexities in pension,” he added.

As Rezaul refused to withdraw the motion, Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah put it on voice vote and the MPs rejected it.

Rezaul said the age ceiling for government job entry in 155 out of 192 countries across the globe is between 55 and 59 years.

“The size of literate but unemployed young population in Bangladesh is over 2.8 million now. They are burden to their families,” he said.

The lawmaker said the age limit should be made 35 considering that many of the youth wer getting involved in crimes like mugging and drug offences.
