Jabed ‘set Nusrat on fire’ after Moni ‘held her down’, police say

Two more suspects have confessed to their parts in the killing of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

The duo, Kamrun Nahar Moni and Jabed Hossain, gave confessional statements in the court of Feni Senior Judicial Magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed on Saturday night.

“After tying Nusrat’s hands and legs on the rooftop, Moni held her down by strangling her,” Special Superintendent of Police Md Iqbal told the media citing the confessionl statements.

“Jabed then poured one litre kerosene on Nusrat and set her on fire by lighting a matchstick,” Iqbal, who is working at the Police Bureau of Investigation or PBI, added.

A total of seven suspects have so far given confessional statements in court in the sensational case.

The others are Nur Uddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Hafez Abdul Quader and Umme Sultana Poppy.    

PBI’s Iqbal said Moni and Jabed were among the five who carried out the arson attack on Nusrat on the rooftop of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrashah on Apr 6.

Before her death on Apr 10, Nusrat said the assailants tricked her onto the rooftop when the Alim candidate went to the madrasa on that day to sit for exams.

They set her on fire as she refused to withdraw sexual abuse charges against principal SM Siraj-ud-Daula.

Arrested on the sexual harassment allegations on Mar 27, Siraj orchestrated the killing from jail, police said.

Poppy, a niece of Siraj, said in her confessional statement on Friday that she had called Nusrat to the rooftop before the attack.

Earlier on Saturday, PBI claimed to have found one of the three burqas worn by the male assailants following a lead given by Zubair Hossain, one of Nusrat’s classmates arrested in the case.

Jabed and Moni were also classmates of Nusrat.

Moni, a relative of Shamim, also admitted to buying the burqas and handing those over to him, the PBI official said.

Shamim took part in the attack also because Nusrat had refused his proposal for a romantic relationship, police had earlier said.

Besides Jabed and Moni and Shamim, Zubair and Poppy were directly involved in the attack, according to police.
