The man has been identified as Rafid Anam Shwargo, 22. He was implicated in seven cases relating to murder, extortion and arms dealing filed with the Bogura police.

Shwargo was killed in a gunfight between two gangs of criminals near the Dhundal Bridge connecting the Uposhohor-Dharampur areas in Bogura city around 1:30 am Friday, said Additional Police Superintendent (Media) Shonaton Chakraborty.

Shwargo's father Liakat was killed in a so-called shootout with the police in 2004.

Liakat was listed as a top criminal by the police at one point, said Sadar Police OC SM Badiuzzaman.

And Shwargo's had recently been terrorising Shajahanpur's Jamadpukur and the city's Khandar Malgram areas, according to Superintendent Shonaton.

On the gunfight, OC Badiuzzaman said that a police team was dispatched to the Dhundal Bridge area upon being informed of the incident.

"The criminals fled upon sensing the presence of the police team. Later, the police found a man lying at the scene with bullet-wounds."

He was rushed to Bogura's Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors on duty declared him dead.

Locals later identified the dead as 'Shwargo', said the OC.

Police recovered a gun, a magazine, a round of bullets and a knife.

Shwargo gained notoriety as a criminal in Bogura city from a young age, said OC Badiuzzaman.

By the time he reached the age of 17, he had already been named in two murder cases.

Shwargo had been arrested by the police at one stage but resumed his criminal activities once he secured a release on bail, added the OC.
