Man dies in shootout between joint forces and Rangamati assailants in Bandarban

A man has been killed in Bandarban in a shootout between ‘joint forces’ and the assailants tied to the killing of Upazila election officials in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari, the army and RAB have said.

The incident occurred near the Myanmar border in Naikhongchhari Upazila around 10:40am Wednesday, said Lt Col Miftaf Uddin, the captain of RAB-7.

The man was identified as Gyanshankar Chakma, 45.

“The drive was launched as those involved in the murders in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari were staying near the border. A joint force of the army, RAB and BGB troopers conducted the drive.”

“Gyanshankar died in the crossfire.”

Seven submachine guns, 11 magazines, 437 rounds of bullets and TK 436,000 were recovered from the scene.

On Mar 18, seven elections officials were shot dead on their on their way back to the Upazila headquarters from polling stations set up at government primary schools at Konglak, Machalong, and Baghihat under the remote union of Sajek.
