She gave the statement to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court of Dhaka on Monday after two rounds of grilling in police custody.

Saima Akter, 40, a cabin crew member of the Saudi Arabian Airlines or Saudia, was arrested with 26 gold bars at the airport on Mar 18.

Customs officials also arrested Farzana Afroz, another crew member of the airline, with 10 gold bars.

After Saima gave the confessional statement, Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqul Islam ordered her back into jail. Farzana is also in jail pending trial.

“Saima has confessed to smuggling gold in the statement given under Section 164,” the court police’s General Recording Officer SI Mahmudur Rahman told bdnews24.com.

A statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code allows the prosecution to use it as evidence in the trial.
