The incident occurred early on Monday in the upazila’s Chhoto Chanua area, said RAB-7 official Maj Mehedi Hassan.

RAB says weapons and ammunition were recovered from the scene of the gunfight, but the deceased has yet to be identified.

Maj Mehedi Hassan said a RAB team conducted a raid in the Chhoto Chanua area after receiving reports a pirate gang were planning an attack.

“They noticed the RAB team’s presence and opened fire. RAB personnel returned fire in self-defence. A body with bullet wounds was found at the scene after the shootout ended.”

According to Maj Mehedi Hassan seven to eight members of the ‘pirate gang’ were engaged in the gunfight and eventually fled.

RAB says it found a revolver, two shotguns, four one-shooter guns and 22 rounds of ammunition at the scene.
