DMP start 48,000 cases, fine offenders Tk 24 million in traffic week

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have started cases involving 48,308 vehicles on charges of violating traffic rules in a week of campaign to raise awareness.

They have fined errant drivers and owners of unfit vehicles Tk 24.1 million and collected over Tk 19.6 million in the ‘traffic discipline week’ from Mar 17 to Mar 23 in the capital.

Md Masudur Rahman, a deputy commissioner at the DMP, told bdnews24.com about the campaign on Sunday.

The vehicles involving 11,864 cases are buses, 299 trucks, 1,174 covered vans, 1,992 pickups, 6,717 autorickshaws, 19,609 motorcycles, 4,959 private cars, 1,106 microbuses, 195 small passenger carriers and 393 other types of vehicles.

Some 301 vehicles were impounded for dumping and wrecker bills were collected from the owners of 5,725 vehicles.

The charges brought in the cases include driving unfit vehicles, wrong-side driving, honking banned hydraulic horns, driving without licence, using hooters and beacon lights illegally and tainted glasses on microbuses.
