Six die in bus-Mahendra collision in Barishal

Four people have been killed and four others injured in a collision between a bus and a local passenger vehicle called "Mahendra" in Barishal’s Babuganj.

The deceased were all passengers of the Mahendra.

The accident occurred around 9 am on Friday on the Barishal-Banaripara road in the Upazila’s Tetultola, said OC Abdur Rahman Mukul, the officer-in-charge of the Barishal Airport Police Station.

The injured have been admitted to the Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

The vehicle’s driver Sohel Khan, 25, Khokon Mia, 40, Manik Sikder, 30, college student Shila Halder,24, Parveen Begum, 35, and Meherunnesa Begum, 55, were killed in the accident.

Two seven-year-olds named Taiyum and Abdullah,  the 15-year-old Tanni and the 30-year-old Dulal Hawladar were injured in the accident. They have been admitted to the Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Of the injured, Taiyyum and Tanni are the children of the deceased Parveen Begum while Abdullah is the grandchild of the deceased Meherunnesa.

A Barishal-bound bus, operated by Durjoy Paribahan, collided with the Mahendra coming from the opposite side, said the OC.

“The injured were rescued and rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead. Another victim died while receiving treatment.”

A five-strong probe team headed by District Magistrate Md Nuruzzaman has been formed to look into the incident.
