The deceased was a 17-year-old HSC examinee named Hridoy, who died on the spot. The injured were rescued and taken to the Sirajganj Sadar Hospital.

The protests lasted about an hour and a half during which protesters set the van ablaze before the police and the local administration brought the situation under control.

A fire service team doused the flames on the covered van after an hour’s efforts, said Md Abdul Hamid, the assistant director of the fire service in Sirajganj.

Citing the accounts of witnesses, OC Habibul said, “A covered van carrying chemical substances hit three pedestrians in the Bhadraghat area. Hridoy was killed on the spot.”
