The incident occurred in the Upazila’s Dhonpur Bhatpara area in the early hours of Thursday morning, said Mamun Ur Rashid, the officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station.

The deceased has been identified as the 35-year-old Jamal Uddin alias Jambu Mia, a “notorious drug smuggler” in the area.

A police team launched a raid in the Dhonpur-Bhatpara area after being informed that ‘drug smugglers’ were meeting there.

“The drug dealers opened fire when the police reached the scene. The police retaliated and Jamal Uddin aka Jambu Mia was shot in the crossfire.”

Jambu was taken to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead, the OC said.

Police recovered 30 kilograms of cannabis and 2,000 yaba tablets from the scene, according to OC Mamun.
