The government is focused on ensuring a great future for children, Hasina said while speaking at an event to celebrate the 99th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children’s Day in Tungipara on Sunday.

“We have created a positive environment for children in Bangladesh so that they can get the opportunity to develop as human beings with a proper education,” Hasina said.

“We have prioritised children’s rights and ensuring they have access to all kind of facilities in education, sports, physical exercise and culture so they can excel in all sectors.”

Hasina also said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of the nation's independence, had contributed to making education free for all children.

Bangabandhu had made the education free in the three years he had following the Liberation War of Bangladesh, she said.

The national Children Act was passed in 1974 and renewed in 2011, she said.

Popular writer Selina Hossain, who is also serving as the Shishu Academy chief, also spoke at the event.

Women and Children's Affairs Secretary Kamrun Nahar and Dhaka Division Commissioner KM Ali Azam also joined the event.
