Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Jafar Ahmed passed the order after hearing petitions filed by him and the court stayed the trial proceedings during the bail.

Lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, accompanied by lawyer Masud Rana, represented Mainul, while Deputy Attorney General Khurshidul Alam represented the state.

Mainul, a former adviser to the military-controlled caretaker government, filed petitions with the High Court seeking cancellation of the cases and bail on Nov 8. Later, Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Jafar Ahmed accepted the petitions.

“No-one, except the victim, has the legal right to file defamation cases,” a judge said during the hearing.

A series of cases were filed against Mainul over his remarks on Ekattor TV defaming journalist Masuda Bhatti on Oct 16. He was also an active member of the Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Front.

He was arrested by police in Dhaka’s Uttara in a case field in Rangpur on Oct 23.

Mainul was named at least 20 defamation cases out of 22 cases. Two other cases were filed under the Digital Security Act.
