Nine Italians were killed in the July 1, 2016 attack in the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan.

The foreign ministry said both minister AH Mahmood Ali and state minister Md Shahriar Alam “deeply appreciated” Palma’s compassionate and constructive approach to tackle the situation.

The ambassador made farewell calls on both of them at the foreign ministry on Tuesday.

He referred to the incident as a ‘sad moment’ during his tenure from Jan 2015 and appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “sympathetic but strong leadership” role in taking the terrorists to task, including combating the scourge of terrorism in Bangladesh.

He also expressed satisfaction at the beginning of trial in court.

They also discussed bilateral relations including trade and investment.

Italy hosts the second largest Bangladeshi expatriate community in Europe after the UK.

The ambassador will leave Dhaka in early January next year.
