Habib Ullah, 35, was in police custody when he died.

The ‘gunfight’ took place on Saturday morning, police said.

Teknaf Police Station OC Prodip Kumar Dash said that Habib Ullah was arrested on Friday afternoon. On Saturday police took him along on a drug raid.

“His accomplices opened fire unexpectedly and police retaliated in self-defence. The detainee was found with gunshot wounds after the shootout. He was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead,” said the OC.

The police said that they recovered 6,000 yaba tablets, two guns and 14 cartridges from the crime scene.

Police say Habib is a known drug dealer and has been accused in six cases at Teknaf Police Station. He has been at large for a long time.

The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, police said.
