Two killed in ‘shootouts’ during anti-drug raids

Two people have been killed in ‘shootouts’ in Sylhet and Munshiganj during anti-drug raids.

RAB claims that the dead were involved in drug dealing and had been accused in drug-related cases. Both of the dead appeared on the list of ‘top drug traders’ prepared by the home ministry.

The man who died in Sylhet has been identified as Md Shahidul Islam alias Shahid Mia, 41, son of Dulal Mia. He was the resident of Telibazar Ahmadpur village.

The incident occurred around 3:30am on Wednesday at South Surma Upazila’s Srirampur bypass area under ​​Moglabazar Police Station, according to RAB-9 Additional Superintendent of Police Md Moniruzzaman.

“RAB raided the area after receiving a report. The drug dealers opened fire, forcing the RAB members to retaliate. Shahidul was found shot after the gunfight.” 

He was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said Moniruzzaman.

A pistol and a huge quantity of yaba pills were recovered from the spot.

The man who died in Munshiganj has been identified as Abul Hossain Sheikh, 49, son of Nazim Uddin Sheikh. He hailed from Kunderbazar village of Tongibari Upazila. He was wanted in 18 cases, including drug trafficking.

“Being tipped off that drug dealer had gathered in the area, a RAB team conducted a raid at 1 am on Wednesday in Deulbari village. The dealers opened fire and the RAB team fired back,” said Major Ashik Billal of RAB-11. 

A man who was shot in the gunfire died on his way to the Tongibari Upazila Health Complex.

Abul Hossain appeared on the list of ‘top drug traders’ prepared by the home ministry, said Major Billal.

A pistol, bullets and 500 yaba pills were recovered from the scene.
