The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Mohammad Tajel.

Tajel, a suspect in 10 cases, was arrested from Jashore’s Monirampur on Friday morning.

According to Sreenagar Police OC Md Yunus Ali, Tajel was taken on a ‘raid’ in Sreenagar Upazila’s West Baroikhali area where he was killed during a ‘gunfight’ with his accomplices.

Police say Tajel was accused of drug-related offences. Over 100 yaba tablets were recovered from the scene of the shootout, they added.

According to police, an arrest warrant had been issued for Tajel in connection with the cases against him. He had also received a 7-year prison sentence in one case over charges of robbery.

“Tajel was arrested around 10:30 am on Friday from Jashore’s Monirampur,” OC Yunus Ali told bdnews24.com. “A police team conducted a raid in Munshiganj based on information he provided.”

“The team was on its way to Madankhali when his accomplices opened fire on the group in the West Baroikhali area around 1:15am. Tajel attempted to flee. His bloody body was found after the shootout. He was taken to Sreenagar Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.”

Police ASI Kawsar and constables Shahidul and Shajal Khan were injured in the incident and admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital, the OC said.

In addition to the yaba, police also recovered a firearm, three pistol bullets and some shell casings from the scene, the OC said.
