Man dies in anti-drug drive in Mymensingh

One person has died in a ‘shootout’ with police during an anti-drug drive in Mymensingh.

The gunfight took place near Shambhuganj Bridge around 1am on Wednesday, said OC Shah Kamal of the detective branch of district police. 

The man has been identified as 27-year-old Sumon Mia, a resident of Charkalibari, who was named in 10 cases including theft and robbery. He was also involved in drug trafficking, claimed the detective police.

A team of detective police raided Shambhganj Bridge to seize drugs, said OC Shah Kamal.

“The armed criminals opened fired on the police and they retaliated in self-defence. Sumon was found shot after the drug dealers fled.”

The police took Sumon to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead, said the OC.

Police recovered 4kg of cannabis from the scene, he said. Two police members have been injured in the incident.
