Police detainee killed in alleged gunfight in Ashulia

Police say a detainee was killed in a gunfight in Dhaka’s Ashulia after his arrest.

Police claim Shamim Hossain, 45, was a robber and was shot dead in the Tongabari area around midnight on Sunday.

Dhamrai Police Station OC Dipak Chandra Saha said they recovered a pistol, bullets, a machete and several other sharp and makeshift weapons from the crime scene.

Shamim was accused in eight cases, which included charges of robbery, at police stations in Savar, Dhamrai, Gazipur and other places, according to the OC.

Shamim was arrested from Kalampur area of Dhamrai around 9 pm on Sunday, he said. Later, he   accompanied police on a raid to catch the other members of the gang. 

"At this time the robbers open fired on police and they retaliated in self-defence. Shamim was shot at one stage during the gunfight."

Savar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Amzadul Haque said Ashulia Police SI Abdus Salam brought the dead body to the hospital around 2:30 am.

Shamim had been hit by three bullets in the chest and legs, he said.
