Hasina said her government’s goal is a free, fair and impartial election. The victors will be chosen by the people, she said.

The prime minister said she hoped for the participation of all political parties in order to build a strong, democratic nation.

The BNP and its allies in the opposition have made a major breakthrough in the political sphere by joining the race to parliament, bringing five years in the political wilderness after their boycott of the previous nationwide election to a close.

Sunday saw the Jatiya Oikya Front and the BNP-led 20 Party Alliance announce that they would take part in the upcoming national parliamentary elections.

The Oikya Front, led by Dr Kamal Hossain, briefed the media on its decision at the National Press Club on Sunday afternoon. The 20-party alliance held a press conference around the same time to announce its participation in the polls.
