Eight of a family die in Joypurhat fire

All the eight members of a family have died in a fire ignited apparently by an electric malfunction of a rice cooker in the northern district of Joypurhat.

The incident occurred at 10pm on Wednesday in the city's Aramnagar area near Joypurhat Shaheed Zia Degree College, according to Fire Station Inspector Sirajul Islam.

Police and firefighters recovered the charred bodies of Dulal Hossain’s wife Momena Begum, 65, and their son Abdul Momin, 37, and daughter Bristi, 14.

Dulal, 71, Momin's wife Parina Begum, their twins Hasi and Khushi, 12, and son Abdur Noor, 6, were first taken to the local hospital in critical condition. All of them died on the way to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to Joypurhat Superintendent of Police Rashidul Hasan.

The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction of a rice cooker, the police said.
