The accident occurred on the Chandpur-Cumilla road in the Bakila area early on Monday, said Haziganj Police OC Alamgir Hossain.

The dead have been identified as Elem Hossain, 45, his son Ekram Hossain and Abu Sufian, 40, all of who hail from Shahrasti Upazila’s Waruk area.

Another autorickshaw passenger Billol Hossain, 35, and the driver have been admitted to Chandpur General Hospital with injuries. The driver has yet to be identified.

The autorickshaw was headed from Shahrasti’s Waruk Bazar to Chandpur when it had an accident with a heavy vehicle in the Bakila area.

According to Chandpur Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Farid Ahmed, the other vehicle was likely a truck or a covered van and fled the area after the accident. There were no eyewitnesses as the accident occurred very early in the morning.

Fishing rods and fishing nets were found inside the autorickshaw, OC Alamgir said. This suggests the passengers were on a fishing trip to Chandpur, he said.
