The bail appeal was on Wednesday’s agenda, but Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman shifted the issue to the next week for a hearing, Barua said.

Shahidul’s lawyers sought bail from the HC for the second time on Monday after the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court denied Shahidul bail on Sept 11.

Earlier, the bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman expressed discomfort with the case on Sept 4.

Shahidul, 63, is now behind bars on charges of “spreading lies” via Facebook.

The HC ordered the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court to settle the bail petition by Sept 11 and the judge rejected the bail.

The police arrested Shahidul, founder of the Drik Gallery, Pathshala and the South-Asian Media Institute on Aug 5, on charges of spreading rumours during a campaign for safer roads by students in Dhaka.

Later police filed a case under the ICT act against Shahidul alleging that he had ‘provoked people and spread false propaganda.’
