Bangladesh has over 230,000 loan defaulters, Muhith tells parliament

Loan-defaulting individuals and companies in Bangladesh numbered 230,658 until June, Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said.

He has also provided the parliament with a list of top 100 loan defaulters.

The amount defaulted until June was Tk 1.32 trillion, according to the finance minister.

He said the number of banks and financial institutions involved in defaulting loan was 88.

Among the state-owned banks, Sonali Bank has Tk 186.62 billion in defaulted loans, Janata Bank Tk 148.40 billion, Agrani Bank Tk 92.84 billion, Rupali Bank Tk 49.01 billion, Basic Bank Tk 85.76 bllion, Krishi Bank Tk 27.78 billion, and Bangladesh Development Bank Tk 23.32 billion.

Among the private banks, Pubali Bank has Tk  21.16 billion worth of defaulted loans, National Bank Tk 50.76 billion, Islami Bank Tk 35.20 billion, and Prime Bank Tk 35.85 billion.
