Police formally charge father, two others over murder of Habiganj teen Beauty

Police have charged in court the father of Beauty Akter and two others over the murder of the teenage girl in Habiganj’s Shayestaganj Upazila in March.

Shah Alam, an OC of the Detective Branch of police who investigated the case, submitted the charge sheet in Habiganj Chief Judicial Magistrates Court on Saturday, Bidhan Tripura, the district’s superintendent of police, told a media briefing on Sunday.

Beauty’s father Sayed Ali and his 'partner in the crime' Moyna Mia had already given their statements to the court, Bidhan said.

The other suspect named in the charge sheet is Kamal Mia, who was allegedly hired by Sayed to kill Beauty.

Police also gave a report on Babul Mia, who had allegedly eloped with Beauty and raped her, and his mother Kalamchan Bibi, the SP said.

Babul had developed a relationship with Beauty, a grade seven student of a local school, and eloped with her in February, according to the police.

Beauty’s mother Husna Begum took her back after finding her and her father Sayed started a rape case against Babul.

SP Bidhan said Moyna, whose wife Asma Akter had lost to Babul’s mother Kalamchan in the local union council elections, had suggested to Sayed that they should kill Beauty and frame Babul.

Beauty’s body was found in the backswamps of the area on Mar 17.

Many termed the picture as the desecration of Bangladesh’s national flag.

Babul was arrested later after the murder of Beauty.

Police said they arrested Moyna after detecting his presence at the crime scene by tracking his mobile phone and then Sayed following Moyna’s statement.
