In a feud over control of the hills district, six people including the district unit president of Hill Students’ Council, backed by United Peoples Democratic Front or UPDF which is headed by Prasit Khisa, were shot dead in the town on Saturday.

Another person died in an attack on a protest procession taken out against the killings later in the day.

Khagrhachharhi Superintendent of Police Ali Ahmad Khan told bdnews24.com on Sunday that the district administration has formed a five-strong committee to investigate the killings.

Additional District Magistrate Abu Yusuf Ali is heading the committee while Sadar Upazila Executive Officer or UNO Shamsul Tabariz is the member secretary.

The other members are Additional SP SM Salah Uddin, doctor Nayanmoy Tripura of Khagrhachharhi Modern General Hospital, and Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Jasim Uddin.

The committee has been given seven working days to submit its report.

No police case over the killings has been started yet, SP Khan said.

A joint force of police, Border Guard Bangladesh and the Army has launched a combing operation to recover illegal arms, and identify and arrest the killers, the SP said.

Police suspect rivals of the UPDF were involved in the attacks, Khan said.

Three injured in the attacks were undergoing treatment at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
