Police have arrested two men for the murder of a soldier in Jhenaidah.
The two were picked up from the Sadar Upazila’s Borai village and Chuadanga’s Badarganj area on Saturday night, said Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman.
The detainees have been identified as Mizanur Rahman from Gorai and Akimul Islam from Bankira.
The deceased, 32-year-old Saiful Islam, is the son of Bankira area resident Habibur Rahman Habur and was assigned to the Ghatail Cantonment Medical Corps in Tangail.
Saiful Islam, his father-in-law Shamsul Islam and his brother Monirul Islam, who is in the Navy, were headed to the families’ home in Bankira from Badarganj Bazar on a motorcycle on Saturday night.
“They came to a halt when they found a tree blocking the road at the Haonghata field near the village,” said Jhenaidah Sadar police OC Emdadul Haque Sheikh.
“Saiful argued with a group of 10-12 men and they attacked him, hacking at his arms and neck with sharp weapons.”
He was taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital in critical condition and passed away around 10:30pm, the police official said.
Saiful’s father filed a case against 5-6 unnamed persons at the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, said Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman.
“After the case was filed, we conducted raids in Borai village to apprehend Mizanur and Badarganj to arrest Akimul.”
A murder weapon was recovered based on information from questioning Akimul, he added.
