Natore Additional Sessions Judge Md Saifur Rahman Siddique announced the verdict on Sunday.

The death row convicts are Hafizur Rahman, 45, Md Bulu, 42, Khalilur Rahman, 40, Mojibur Rahan, 45, and Monir Hossain, 50.

Three of the convicts, Bulu, Khalil and Monir, are still at large.

Suspects Nazrul Islam and Abdul Hakim were sentenced to life in prison and fined Tk 100,000 each.

Two other suspects, Aslam and Nazrul Islam, died before the trial was complete and were subsequently exempted, said Assistant Public Prosecutor Masud Hassan.

According to the verdict, the victim Abdul Kader was shot dead in the Bias Bazar area for spreading word that members of the Sarbahara Dal had demanded bribes.

The court had ordered arrests of the absconding convicts.

The verdict called the killing a diabolical act and said that all the suspects were involved with it. Defendant Mojibur Rahman had already confessed to the murder to the judicial magistrate.

According to the case dossier, farmer Abdul Quader was abducted from his home in Shingra Upazila in front of his family on Feb 3, 2004. He was then shot dead in public in the Bias Bazara area.

The case over Kader’s death was filed by his wife Zainab Bewa. Police filed the chargesheet against the suspects on Sept 20 of that year.

According to Zainab, all of the killers are members of the Sarbahara Dal. They had alleged that her husband was spreading stories about them asking contractors building a local hospital for bribes, she said.
