Two ninth graders from Willes Little Flower School and College drowned after going to bathe in Dhaka’s Ramna lake on Sunday.

The two were retrieved from the lake around 3pm and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared them dead.

The two victims were identified as ‘Adnan’ and ‘Mahfuz’

They were approximately 15 to 16 years old, according to Dhaka Medical Police Outpost Inspector Md Bachchu Miah.

Three students from the school went to bathe in the lake after playing football, said Ramna Police SI Rais Uddin, citing witnesses.

“One of them could swim, but the other two didn’t know how to. At one point, all three became submerged in the water.”

People in the area were able to rescue one of the boys alive, but the other two were found unconscious.

The fire service sent personnel to the area after learning that two boys had drowned, said Fire Service Control Room official Ershad Hossain.

The two were found and taken to the hospital before the team arrived.

In Narayanganj, two 7-year-old schoolboys drowned in the Meghna River at Sonargaon Upazila.

The accident occurred when grade II student ‘Yasin’, and Bin Yameen of grade I went to take a bathe in the river at Haria Gobindi on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Strong current washed away the two boys, Narayanganj district's Additional Superintendent of Police Khorshed Alam said, citing witnesses.

The locals recovered the bodies later, he added.
